Essential Oil of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

  

Family: Geraniaceae

Origin: Often obtained from France, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and Italy

Plant description: An attractive plant about 2 feet high with serrated, pointed leaves and small pink flowers.

Part of plant used for essential oil: Flowering plant

Extraction method: Steam

Main Chemical Constituents: Geranic (Acid), Geraniol, Citronellol, Linalool, Myrtenol, Terpineol (Alcohols), Citral (Aldehyde), Methone (Ketone), Eugenol (Phenol), Sabinene (Terpene).

PRECAUTIONS: Generally does not have many side affects however may cause some irritation to sensitive skin prolonged use. Regulates the hormonal system and should not be used during pregnancy.

PROPERTIES: Analgesic, anticoagulant, antidepressant, antiseptic, astringent, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, haemostatic, hypoglycemiant, insecticide, styptic, tonic, vasoconstrictor, vulnerary.

 

USES:

Circulation/Muscles/Joints: Acts as a tonic to the circulatory system, making it more fluid. Has pain relieving properties that help with neuralgia.

Digestive: Clears any mucus in the digestive system and may be good for gastritis and colitis.

Immune System: Stimulates the lymphatic system which helps keep infection away and disposes of waste products. Effective in throat and mouth infections.

Nervous system: A tonic to the nervous system

Mental/Emotional: Quells anxiety and depression while lifting the spirits. Puts the mind back into balance. Its detoxifying action can be helpful with addictions.

Reproductive: Reduces stress through its action on the adrenal cortex. Eases premenstrual tension and depression due to menopause. Increases vaginal secretion and eases heavy periods. Helps in reduce inflammation of breast tissues.

Urinary system: Its diuretic properties helps when the system is and congested. Acts as a tonic to the liver and kidneys and clears the body of toxins. Also helps clear jaundice, bladder and kidney stones, diabetes and urinary infections. Generally guards against fluid retention and swollen ankles.

Skin care: Helpful for many skin conditions as it balances sebum. Clears eczema, burns, shingles, herpes, and ringworm. Also can be great for sluggish, congested and oily skin. Brightens pale skin since it improves blood flow.

 

About this essential oil: A blend of geranium and sweet orange can pacify frustration. Many people planted geranium around their cottages to keep evil spirits at bay.
