Marjoram

Essential Oil of Marjoram (Origanum hortensis)

 

Family: Labiatae

Origin: Originally from Libya, Egypt and the Mediterranean region. Now much of the oil is obtained from France

Plant description: Bushy perennial herb about 24 in. high, has a hairy stem, dark green oval leaves, and small white or pink flowers.

Part of plant used for essential oil: Herb/Flowering heads/leaves

Extraction method: Distillation

Main Chemical Constituents: Borneol, Terpineol (Alcohols), Camphor (Ketone), Caryophyllene (Sesquiterpene), Pinene, Sabinene, Terpinene (Terpenes).

PRECAUTIONS: Generally non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing however prolonged use can cause drowsiness and it is best avoided during pregnancy. Do not use more than 10 days in a row as it is an Anaphrodisiac and can lower libido.

PROPERTIES: Analgesic, Anaphrodisiac, Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Carminative, Cephalic, Cordial, Digestive, Emmenagogue, Expectorant, Hypotensive, Laxative, Nervine, Restorative, Sedative, Tonic, Vulnerary.

 

USES:

Circulation/Muscles/Joints: Affective in dealing with painful muscles, notably in the lower back area possibly when connected to digestive problems and menstrual disorders. May also help with rheumatic aches and pains and swollen joints, especially where there is a feeling of cold and stiffness. Beneficial as an after sports rub.

Digestive: Helps back pain related to digestive problems. Helps with stomach cramps, indigestion, constipation, flatulence, and could aid the body in clearing toxins.

Immune System:

Nervous system: Calming effect on the nervous system.

Mental/Emotional: Relieves anxiety, stress and deeper psychological traumas. Strengthens the mind and helps to confront issues. May give a feeling of comfort in cases of grief and loneliness. Excellent for hyper active people.

Reproductive: Helps back pain related to menstrual disorders. Could help regulate the menstrual cycle and relive painful periods. Has a reputation for quelling sexual desire.

Circulation: Dilates the arteries and capillaries, allowing easier flow of blood, promoting a feeling of wellbeing and warmth. A good tonic to the heart and seems to lower blood pressure.

Respiratory system: Seems to have a beneficial action on chest infections as well as colds and alleviates congestion.

Skin care: Valuable in clearing bruises since it promotes blood flow.
